OK, so this is lame – decided to do the recycle filter and return thing to donate more often to cancer patients.

‘the return" portion "blew out" as the nurse described it. Actually it did not hurt much and I will do it again.

When the machine decided to return my blood to my vein my vein said, I can’t take that, and blew up to the size of a hot dog.

The nice nurse said, you are going to have a big, big bruise. It is will be OK.

She was right.. It did not hurt at all. Well, not much.

Go give blood.

It is free and it saves lives.

{edit in 1/6/10} I think I inadvertently caused this as I review things in hindsight. How I think this happened – this machine takes whole blood out of your arm, like any normal donation does. The machine then removes a specific blood component like platelets, whatever they need, and then returns everything else back to your vein. Therefore you can donate more frequently.

This was the first time I did this and I think I misunderstood the instructions. I asked if I should squeeze the foam rubber football every 5 seconds like in a normal whole blood donation and the nurse said, "No, only if the machine beeps which means the flow is low. It will give a different beep when the return of blood starts, so don’t squeeze then." I think I squeezed on the wrong beep, when the return started and thereby constricted my vein and impeded the return blood flow. And my vein blow up like a balloon and blood squirted out into my arm under the skin.

Received this pen during my recent blood donation, I’m not really a frequent donor, so this year, I will try my very best to donate blood more often when I can. Hope you do too.. it’s not really that painful.. trust the needle =)
